Care & Use

The Field Method

  1. Rinse your pan with warm water and use a brush to remove loose food. Soap is optional!
  2. Use a chain mail scrubber to lift any remaining bits and gently scuff the cooking surface and side walls.
  3. Heat your pan on the stovetop for a few minutes to dry it. If needed, wipe up any remaining moisture with a paper towel.
  4. Apply a small dab of seasoning oil and use a paper towel or rag to coat every surface evenly.
  5. Wipe away the excess to leave a dry, matte finish.

Cook with your skillet often. Every meal builds a base of resilient, naturally nonstick seasoning.

When something looks off

Most surface issues, like sticking, uneven seasoning or light rust, aren't defects. They're part of your skillet's journey, and a little care (and more cooking) is nearly always the cure.

Details

Set includes:

  • The No.8 Cast Iron Dutch Oven: Designed to retain steam and distribute heat evenly for crusty, golden loaves. Lighter than traditional cast iron, with a tight-fitting lid and pre-seasoned for immediate use.

  • Field Bench Scraper: Made from high-carbon stainless steel with a cherry wood handle. Use it to portion dough, transfer ingredients, and clean flour-covered surfaces without dulling your knives or damaging your boards.

  • XL Cleaning Cloth: Oversized and absorbent, this durable cotton cloth is designed to handle flour, oil, and everyday mess without shedding lint or breaking down over time.

Whether you’re just getting started or baking weekly, this is the setup that keeps things simple, clean, and consistently good.

Dimensions

Field cast iron cookware match traditional vintage sizing conventions, where the “number” corresponds not to diameter in inches, but to the burner ring size on an old-fashioned wood-burning stove. That means a 4.5 quart No.8 Dutch Oven is actually wider than 8 inches. (It’s tricky, we know.)

Here’s how we measure up:

4.5-quart volume

10 ¼” top diameter

7 ⅞ base diameter

6.5 lbs (base); 10.5 lbs (with lid)

4.4" height

Origin & Materials
  • Field Cast Iron is 100% Made in the USA. We work with recycled iron and pour our cast iron cookware using green sand castings—just like the most celebrated vintage cast iron manufacturers, Griswold and Wagner.

  • PFOA and PFTE Free. A well-seasoned cast iron pan achieves a natural non-stick surface without harmful chemicals or engineered coatings. Your skillet will arrive pre-seasoned with several coats of grapeseed oil, so it’s ready to cook right away.

    Love this Dutch Oven

We use our Dutch Oven almost every night to cook various vegetables and stews to assure we all get enough iron. Cooking with Field iron pans and pots has been a game-changer for raising our iron levels. On a practical note, they are surprisingly easy to clean. That’s a welcome perk.
