Care & Use

The Field Method

  1. Rinse your pan with warm water and use a brush to remove loose food. Soap is optional!
  2. Use a chain mail scrubber to lift any remaining bits and gently scuff the cooking surface and side walls.
  3. Heat your pan on the stovetop for a few minutes to dry it. If needed, wipe up any remaining moisture with a paper towel.
  4. Apply a small dab of seasoning oil and use a paper towel or rag to coat every surface evenly.
  5. Wipe away the excess to leave a dry, matte finish.

Cook with your skillet often. Every meal builds a base of resilient, naturally nonstick seasoning.

When something looks off

Most surface issues, like sticking, uneven seasoning or light rust, aren't defects. They're part of your skillet's journey, and a little care (and more cooking) is nearly always the cure.

Details

Whether it's your very first cast iron skillet or an upgrade from the rough stuff, you'll love our vintage-style iron: light enough for everyday use, with a smooth naturally non-stick surface.

Set includes:

    What's included
    • No.10 Cast Iron Skillet
    • Natural Fiber Cleaning Brush
    • Chain Mail Scrubber
    • Cast Iron Seasoning Oil
    Dimensions
    • 11 ⅝" top diameter
    • 9 ¾" cooking surface
    • 6 lb total weight

Field Skillets match traditional vintage sizing conventions, where the “number” corresponds not to diameter in inches, but to the burner ring size on an old-fashioned wood-burning stove. That means a No.10 skillet is actually larger than 10 inches. (It’s tricky, we know.)

Looking for a smaller pan? Try our Starter Set, featuring the No.8 Skillet + Care Kit

    Origin & Materials
    • Field Cast Iron is 100% Made in the USA. We work with recycled iron and pour our cast iron cookware using green sand castings—just like the most celebrated vintage cast iron manufacturers, Griswold and Wagner.

    • PFOA and PFTE Free. A well-seasoned cast iron pan achieves a natural non-stick surface without harmful chemicals or engineered coatings. Your skillet will arrive pre-seasoned with several coats of grapeseed oil, so it’s ready to cook right away.

Your new everyday pans—meticulously designed smoother, lighter cast iron skillets reminiscent of the best vintage American cast iron.

A well-seasoned cast iron skillet is the only pan you need in your kitchen. Cast iron’s heat retention and knack for developing a natural non-stick surface benefits nearly every kind of cooking.

    Frequently
    Asked Questions

Vintage cast iron pans, the type prized for their smooth nonstick surfaces, used to be finished by hand. Today, most manufacturers produce rough, pebbly skillets to save cost. That's not all bad—it just takes longer to build a shiny and truly nonstick seasoning.

Field Skillets use a machining process modeled on the best of vintage cookware, precisely dialed in to be as smooth as possible while leaving just a touch of texture on the cooking surface to hold a great seasoning.

Yes! We deliver a pan that is ready to cook out of the box with a great cooking experience. Our naturally non-stick cooking surface comes from several coats of grapeseed oil pre-seasoning. No teflon, no dirty tricks.

Like all cast iron pans, you will see the non-stick properties increase even more over time as you follow the tried and true seasoning rule: Just Keep Cooking!

They do! We have a clever feature on all Field Company skillets—a heat ring! This is one of our favorite features: it’s both a reference to cookware conventions in a bygone era, and a clever way to meet the performance challenges of contemporary kitchens.

Our heat ring is designed to make sure the Field Skillet remains balanced as it heats up on glass or ceramic flat cooktops. At just 0.04” of clearance, it won’t interfere with cooking performance or lose any power from electric or induction heat elements, particularly since induction is activated through magnetics and iron is a magnetic element.

Field Skillets aren’t as light as throwaway nonstick cookware, but neither are they unnecessarily heavy. We spent years studying our favorite vintage skillets to find the perfect balance between lightness while maintaining enough bottom thickness for high heat searing and even cooking.

Our research found the Goldilocks zone to be 4.3 to 4.5 lbs for a 10 inch skillet. Anything above this zone only makes your pan harder to maneuver without adding cooking performance and anything below makes the pan more susceptible to warping or breakage. This weight is most similar to a Griswold skillet, one of our favorite antiques.

      Second skillet

We already have a no. 8 Field but with the sale on the no. 10 set with the Dutch oven I decided to replace our 10” lodge. I already know the quality and benefits of this cast iron but I went with more Field products because of the weight. I recently purchased a no. 4 for my grandma to cook her eggs and she marvelled at the lightness of it. For me, pulling a 10” Chicago style pizza out of the oven that’s piping hot is difficult and having a lighter pan that still distributes the heat evenly and gives it a crust is so helpful! Not to mention the pan is much smoother better quality iron. Overall very pleased with my purchases.

Love this pan. Worth every penny

I have been babying cast irons for years. Only have them get crappy build ups. This pan is smooth and cooks everything perfectly.

      Works as advertised

I bought their #8 around 7/8 years ago. It lost its nonstick even though I followed their guidelines w chain mail I already had, scrapers, and oils.

I purchased their chain mail, brush, and seasoning and it’s nonstick again.

      Great pan

I’ve been wanting a nice smooth bottom cast iron pan for a while. I’ve used other brands, however this one is my favorite. Great purchase and I’ll be buying a smaller size as well.
