Care & Use

The Field Method

  1. Rinse your pan with warm water and use a brush to remove loose food. Soap is optional!
  2. Use a chain mail scrubber to lift any remaining bits and gently scuff the cooking surface and side walls.
  3. Heat your pan on the stovetop for a few minutes to dry it. If needed, wipe up any remaining moisture with a paper towel.
  4. Apply a small dab of seasoning oil and use a paper towel or rag to coat every surface evenly.
  5. Wipe away the excess to leave a dry, matte finish.

Cook with your skillet often. Every meal builds a base of resilient, naturally nonstick seasoning.

When something looks off

Most surface issues, like sticking, uneven seasoning or light rust, aren't defects. They're part of your skillet's journey, and a little care (and more cooking) is nearly always the cure.

The Field Story

Founded by two brothers with a passion for cast iron, our journey in cast iron began with the question “Why don’t they make them like they used to?”  We pour our cast iron cookware using green sand castings—just like the most celebrated vintage cast iron manufacturers, Griswold and Wagner. Also like vintage skillets, the Field Skillet is a full pound light than most cast iron on the market, and machined smooth for a surface that seasons to a nonstick finish.

Seasoning 101

A well-seasoned cast iron pan achieves a natural non-stick surface made up of naturally occurring polymers from the oils you use on your pan—no harmful chemicals or engineered coatings. Our pans are 100% free of PFOAs and PTFEs—your skillet will arrive pre-seasoned with several coats of grapeseed oil, so it’s ready to cook right away.

It is not necessary to season your Field Skillet in the oven. Your pan will continue to develop seasoning easily and naturally just by cooking and keeping the surface of your pan smooth and free of build up. Read more about our recommended cleaning process at the Field Method for Cast Iron Care & Maintenance, and more about seasoning here.

How to Use

Field cast iron cookware is compatible with all stovetop burner types, including glass and ceramic induction ranges. Like all great tools, cast iron cookware gets better with time and use. To keep your Field Skillet in top condition:

  • Pre-heat on low for up to 5 minutes before you start cooking.

  • Clean according the Field Method for Cast Iron Care & Maintenance

  • Hand-wash only. Never in the dishwasher.

  • Towel dry and warm on the stovetop to evaporate moisture. Never drip-dry or store wet.

Most importantly, cook often!

Frequently Asked Questions

Most modern cast iron is heavy and rough—sold "as cast" to save on costs. Field skillets are machined smooth, modeled on the best vintage cookware—thinner walls, less weight, and a surface that builds great seasoning fast.

It's how cast iron used to be made, done even better.

Like all Field skillets, it's made in the US with iron sourced from US vendors. Several coats of seasoning oil are baked into the surface so you can start using it as soon as you get it.

No chemical coatings, no PFAS of any kind. Just iron and oil.

Every Field skillet comes ready to cook, pre-seasoned with several coats of grapeseed oil. The nonstick surface only gets better the more you cook and will continue to develop from the oils you cook with.

Learn more about cast iron care.

Yes—all of our cast iron products work on induction. Cast iron is naturally magnetic, which is exactly what induction cooktops require (even if the bottom of the pan doesn't have full contact). You are also welcome to try the pan for 45 days with your own stove to make sure it's right for you.

During our years of testing we found traditional pour spouts just don’t work that well. They still drip.

So we removed them. Field's curved walls flare like a spoutless pitcher—liquid pours cleanly from anywhere around the rim. Uniform wall thickness throughout keeps weight down without sacrificing strength.

Field Skillets aren't as light as throwaway nonstick—but they're not unnecessarily heavy either. After years studying our favorite vintage pans, we found the sweet spot: 4.3–4.5 lbs for a 10-inch skillet. Light enough to maneuver. Thick enough for serious heat. Go above that range and you're just adding weight without adding performance. Go below and the pan becomes vulnerable to warping. It's the same weight as a Griswold—one of the finest skillets ever made. Not a coincidence.

    Love this pan

I have had this pan for about four months now and it has become my go-to pan. I only use my stainless pans for acidic foods. I have seasoned it several times and it is becoming very nonstick. It just keeps getting better. I would get the no 10 but I had purchased a Lancaster already. The Field is definitely easier to season than the Lancaster. I think my next Field pan will be the no 8 deep skillet!
